A month ago, we were contacted by a musically-inclined young man, Eli Rosen, on a mission to revitalize local music education programs. Appreciative of the music education he has received as a budding guitar virtuoso, Eli was saddened to know that so many others were not as fortunate. Inspired to make a change, he set out to on a mission to collect second-hand guitars for donation to poorly-funded schools. Thus far, Eli has collected 10 guitars, and has already chosen a school in Camden, NJ to receive them. Eli plans to teach beginning guitar to the kids that receive the guitars, and even hopes to stage a fundraising concert for his cause. The Fender Music Foundation has donated a guitar to Eli, and he hopes that anyone else with old or unwanted guitars will do the same. In the following interview, it is apparent that Eli is heading for great heights, and will accomplish extraordinary feats.

12 year old Eli Rosen poses with the 10 guitars he has collected thus far on his mission to bring music to poorly-funded schools.

What inspired you to help this music program in need?

I’ve been playing guitar for about three years and it’s made a huge difference in my life. Playing the guitar has given me a way to express myself and be creative. It has also taught me that by practicing regularly you will learn discipline. Two and a half years ago I couldn’t play one note on the guitar. After giving the time and practicing over and over again I was able to play songs. I would not be able to play the guitar like I can now if I didn’t practice or have a guitar in the first place. I feel so much joy and passion for playing the guitar and I want other kids to have that same opportunity. This is why I wanted to give something back and donate to a school in need.

Are you a student of the music teacher you have set out on a mission to help?

No, I’m not a student of the music teacher. As I was looking for a school to be the recipient of this donation, by chance, I met Joe Fertsch who is a great music teacher in Camden, NJ. He loves his job and more importantly the kids he does it for. But, the school is in a disadvantaged area and all they can afford for their music program is five-gallon buckets to bang on. So I want to give those kids a chance that they may not have otherwise.

How many guitars have you been able to collect thus far on your mission?

So far I’ve collected ten guitars to donate, but my goal is to reach up to twenty-five. I think that the more guitars collected-the more children have the opportunity to play.

How were you able to obtain these guitars?

I collected the guitars from individuals, businesses, and organizations. But really it’s about spreading the word. If I told one person about my project-they would tell a friend and then they would tell someone else and so on and so on. I hope this continues, maybe even enough to surpass my goal which could lead to helping other schools in need.

You say you have been playing guitar for 3 years. Who are your greatest guitar influences?

I’d say Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan are some of my favorites. I have many guitar influences, most of them blues guitarists. I also admire Tommy Emmanuel’s acoustic style. But, I can’t leave out Ted Velykis…my awesome guitar teacher!

What are your favorite bands/artists?

My favorite band has always been The Beatles, but I like a lot of bands and artists, old and new. Some other bands or artists that I like are Led Zeppelin, John Mayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Mathews Band, and Coldplay.

You mentioned that you might be putting on a fundraising concert. Are you in a band of your own that might perform at this concert?

Yes, my band is going to play at the concert and there are also going to be a number of other bands there.

Why do you think it is important for there to be a thriving music education program in school?

Music is sometimes known as the universal language. If bad things are happening music is something where everyone can get along. It’s math-quarter notes, half notes, whole notes. It’s culture-Latin, Chicago Blues, Hip-Hop. Really, music is tied to everything that is taught in school and in life. Kids can learn to work hard and be dedicated to learning music. It can also teach kids to work together, if they ever start a band. Music is a gift and a music education program is the wrapping paper.

If you or anybody that you know has a guitar they are willing to part with, please contact The Fender Music Foundation at Fendermusicfoundation@gmail.com and we will relay the message to Eli. Eli Rosen hopes to collect enough guitars to donate to other schools in need.

When adults make the decision to learn a new skill, it is solely because they want to. There is no driving force telling them they have to. They rely on self-motivation as well as the desire to be a part of a community. This is where learning to play an instrument comes in. In addition to being part of a team of other musicians, the benefits of music education for adults includes improved quality of life by relieving stress and improving the brain’s cognitive function.

Dr. Roy Ernst is the founder of the New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA), which supports a number of organizations nationwide. These organizations provide music education for retired adults in group settings. “People make strong connections to life through music… most importantly, group music makes connections to other people. They are part of a team working towards goals,” says Ernst. He points out that the people who participate make new friends who share a common interest, and that socialization is an important aspect of good physical and mental health.

Stress plays a big part on both physical and mental health. When it comes to making music, the intention is to engage in a recreational activity that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed, thus reducing the stress factor. In addition, learning notes and rhythm requires an individual’s full attention., which improves concentration and cognitive skills. Dr Ernst states “Think of reading notes at perhaps four notes per second, with each note having many qualities such as pitch, duration, articulation, dynamics and context. Then, that all needs to be processed into motor skills. After all that, it still needs to become an artistic expression.” That being said, it is stated on numerous pages of NHIMA’s website that absolutely everyone has the ability to learn music, and that everyone has musical talent in them.

Upon the announcement about the return of System of a Down earlier this year for their 2011 World Tour after a 5-year hiatus, Fender Music Foundation intern and avid SOAD fan RoseMary approached the band to see if they were interested in donating memorabilia to proceed music education. With much excitement surrounding their highly anticipated return, drummer John Dolmayan took advantage of this opportunity by not only responding with enthusiasm to promoting the cause but also by donating his personal used tom drum from the actual drum set used during rehearsals for their then upcoming tour.

Arriving at their rehearsal location in Burbank, CA, RoseMary was thrilled to visit the studio where the band conjures up their heavy metal magic. RoseMary remembers, “It was so exciting just to be at the studio, let alone being able to take one of John’s drums home with me.” There she thanked the SOAD camp for their contribution and being an eager fan herself, chatted in excitement about seeing her first SOAD show in years. Upon departing the studio, drum tech Sako grabbed some used drumsticks right off the drum set to further increase the item’s value.

The drum itself was personally selected for the cause and is in great condition. “It’s a beautiful tom drum, with its drumhead worn from some heavy hitting drumming. The pearl white Tama drum set that it was once apart of is so massive it was intimidating.” John made sure to sign the interior of the drum in black sharpie so that his large signature would be better preserved and the drum playable for one lucky musician. He also signed “SOAD 2011” under his signature to commemorate its significance in being a token of a new beginning for the band, as it was apart of the rehearsal drum set for their first tour since 2006.

Being a used item by the musician itself, the item is one of the more unique additions to The FMF store, and with a little reluctance, RoseMary passed the drum along knowing it will one day find a happy home to someone with a big heart who helped The FMF provide resources for needy music programs.

Click here to view the item in our FMF store: https://www.fendermusicfoundation.org/store/index.cfm?view=item&prodId=477&cat=8

On October 25, Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman, guitarist of Rage Against the Machine, formerly Audioslave, and the Street Sweeper Social Club, played at West Hollywood’s legendary Troubadour venue to a sold out crowd. Performing as The Nightwatchman, Tom Morello captivated the audience for over two hours with acoustic folk and protest music. Keeping true to his activism, he had just returned from protesting and performing at the Occupy LA protests earlier in the day (Rolling Stone article.)

Before the night was over Morello did not fail to wow the audience with some face melting guitar shredding during “The Ghost of Tom Joad” that left the crowd in awe. The show ended with Morello inviting the audience to come on stage with him as he sang Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” a folk standard and a staple of The Nightwatchmen’s set.

After the show, Morello continued to support charity by signing two guitars for The Fender Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization that awards instruments to music education programs across the country. Along with his signature, Morello added the slogan “Let Freedom Ring” to a Fender Kingmen Acoustic and “Take it easy, but make it” to a special edition black and chrome Squire Strat, which are now embedded with the heart and soul of what makes him such a great musician, passion!

Guitars in the Classroom is bringing music to students by training their teachers in music. Not only are teachers taught guitar basics to share with their students, they are also given interesting songwriting techniques they can implement in their classrooms in an effort to engage their students more effectively.

Skeptics and musical Scrooges might find incorporating music into the classroom beyond the allotted time for band and choir useless and counterproductive to a child’s education. Fortunately for the rest of us there is an organization that begs to differ. Guitars in the Classroom (GITC), a non-profit organization geared at bringing music back into the classroom, is attempting to make music one of the key building blocks to a child’s education. What GITC does is educate teachers with basic competencies on musical knowledge and even provide them with the skill-set to lead a song service on the guitar. These song services vary from interactive song writing lessons, singing standards ranging from Bach to Old MacDonald, but most importantly these songs are picked apart and rearranged to teach grammar, math, and other academic fields. Recently the GITC, in collaboration with Alfred Music Publishing, released The Green Songbook geared at spreading environmental education amongst grade school kids. The songbook includes songs by Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Ziggy Marley, and Michael Jackson, to name a few, and even comes with a sing-along CD.

On top of this, Guitars in the Classroom has started songwriting sessions in the classroom. One classroom wrote a song entitled: “The Honey Dew Blues” in a collaborative effort that incorporated all of the students.

The exercise of writing music not only positively stimulates the brain by strengthening memory and creativity, but it also provides kids with the tools they will need if they one day aspire to be songwriters. Did I also mention that it is just plain fun? With educators often finding it difficult to retain their students’ attention for more than a few minutes at a time, Guitars in the Classroom is doing a fantastic job of giving teachers alternate, fun, and most importantly, effective methods of reaching their students.

The word “philanthropy” can conjure images of a humble and meek Mother Teresa helping the poor, rich business tycoons like Bill Gates writing out multi-million-dollar-checks, or perhaps “philanthropy” can ignite memories of a friend or family member who spent their life in pursuit of service to those in need. Regardless of your precise definition, the world of philanthropy is beginning to usher in a new category of benefactors–kids. Crazy as it may sound, kids are actually finding some very interesting ways to better the world around them.

This October, a teenage Southern California native added his name to a growing list of young philanthropists by throwing a birthday party in honor of The Fender Music Foundation. Jacob, a music connoisseur since infancy, decided the best thing he could do was contribute to the spread and survival of music education. In lieu of receiving gifts for his birthday, Jacob asked that his guests make a donation to The Fender Music Foundation. When asked about his altruistic decision Jacob stated: “ I realize how blessed I am to have a family who supports my interests and talent emotionally and financially. I felt like it would be horrible if I couldn’t have music in my life.” As recently elected Philanthropy Commissioner at his middle-school, Jacob believes it is his duty to provide service to those in need. When asked further about his role as Philanthropy Commissioner, Jacob responded by saying: “I really feel like this year I am responsible to be a leader and show kids my age and younger it is important and rewarding to think of others less fortunate than us and make a difference.”

Jacob’s birthday party was thrown at Newport Harbor and hosted over ninety of hisfellow friends and classmates who all got into the spirit of giving. With the help of his classmates, Jacob was able to raise over $1500, which will contribute to The Fender Music Foundation’s mission to make music education universally accessible. Jacob now finds himself on a bourgeoning list of child philanthropists who are finding unique ways to make a difference. The Fender Music Foundation applauds the efforts of Jacob and looks forward to seeing where music will take him.
